The Merino Country Vignerons Association Inc. represents a small group of grape growers and wine makers located primarily between the Canberra and the Southern Highlands Geographic Indicator regions, and is centred on the historic fine wool centre of Goulburn, NSW. The Hilltops, Cowra and Orange GI regions are west, northwest and north of the area respectively.
The area is a cool climate wine area, with elevations ranging from about 600 to 900 metres. Snow regularly falls on the higher elevations. The climate is generally similar to that of Canberra. It is somewhat less humid and receives less rainfall than the Southern Highlands.
The area produces award winning Shiraz, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc, with wineries above 900 metres producing Pinot Noir with great depth of varietal character
The Merino Country food, wine & culture trail brochure gives an idea of some of the other attractions in our area, although not all of these are currently still operating.
